Bamboo Clam Shell Pavilion

Bamboo Clam Shell Pavilion
International Competition Entry - Shortlisted as Category Finalist
An International competition entry to design a bamboo pavilion for islands in the Pacific. The structure is based on the metaphor of an open clam shell, and constructed primarily from bamboo. This structure would become the islands main “community” space, used to hold the daily fish market, festivals, meetings and celebrations.

The concept of the clam shells represents the importance of the sea and its bounty to the islanders, their culture and history. The design is a light, elegant structure that uses a traditional material in a contemporary way. The design represents interplaying relationships between light, space, material, form and structure.
This community clam pavilion makes use of both the natural compression and tension characteristics of bamboo to explore the potential of this versatile material. The modern identity of the structure is provided by the stainless steel connection details as well as the overall dynamic form. The roof “skin” is made from impermeable sail cloth, this allows translucent light through the expressive structure creating a rich shadow pattern of the bamboo rafters on the floor.
